Quotes
Quote 1.
" My spirit is unconquerable...I don't care what's probable. Through blood, sweat, and tears, I am unstoppable." (Page 189)
This quote was chosen because it represents the overall message of the book; to persevere and to not give up. It shows that it was the hardships on and off the mat that made him unstoppable. It's important because his life story is presented in this quote. From birth to now, he dealt with blood, sweat and tears. His unconquerable spirit is his motivation to becoming unstoppable.
Quote 2.
" This explains my conflicted reaction to being nominated for the Best Male Athlete with a Disability ESPY Award after winning the national championship in my weight class in high school: I was flattered by the nomination but angered by the name of the category. I don't see myself as disabled. What am I unable to do? (You know, other than dance. And maybe play kickball at an elite level.)" (Page xiii)
I chose this quote because it showed his inspiration to keep on going, even though people thought he wasn't capable of wrestling . He had the self determination to propel himself forward. To do this, he had to see himself as any other athlete, regardless of his disabilities. This is important because without his determination, he wouldn't be who he is today; a three-time all-American wrestler and member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Quote 3.
" 'This is the way god made you,' and on that afternoon I kept asking, 'WHY did he make me this way?' " (Page 13)
This quote was chosen because it demonstrated the down point of Roble's life. It's important because Robles builds his way up from this point to become a champion. Every champion story always has his downfall, and this is necessary because champions need this to keep them going. At this point, Robles could have easily not decided to keep on going and give up. But he didn't. And after this point his life only got better.
Quote 4.
"Fitting in was everything. That's why I loved playing flag football in sixth and seventh grade. Being a member of a team, being one of the guys, meant a lot to me. I wanted to be a part of some collective- to not be an outcast. I wanted to feel like I belonged. Sadly, that wasn't something I could take for granted, even in my own home" (Page 19)
This quote was chosen because it shows that at one point in his life, his only focus was to fit in. It's important because later on in the book, his focus was not to fit in, but quite the opposite. He was motivated to become a unique individual and to keep on going even if nobody was there with him . He didn't have a "collective" to be a part of.
Quote 5.
" It was real. I'd won the national title. It wasn't a dream." (page 176)
I chose this quote because this represented the climax of his life. He had finally won national title. It's important because his hard work finally paid off. It showed wrestlers throughout America , that a disabled man could become a champion and could not be stopped.
